The fluid enters the pump axially through the suction nozzle (6) and is accelerated outwards by the rotating impeller (7). In the pump casing's flow path, the kinetic energy of the fluid is converted into pressure energy. The fluid is pumped to the discharge nozzle (2), where it exits the pump. The clearance gap (1) prevents any fluid from flowing back from the casing to the suction nozzle. At the back of the impeller, the shaft (4) enters the casing through the casing cover (3). The shaft passes through bracket bearings and is sealed to the atmosphere with a shaft seal (9). The shaft runs in plain bearings and rolling element bearings (8 and 10); its bearings are supported by the bearing bracket (5) connected to the pump casing and/or cover.

The pump is sealed with a standard mechanical seal. If the pump is equipped with a double mechanical seal, it is connected to a cooling water supply to prevent leakage of the pumped fluid to the atmosphere. It also prevents contact between the fluid and the lubricating oil of the rolling element bearings, especially for fluids with a tendency to creep.
